Hi. I am currently looking for some reference materials for a Seminar-Workshop on How to Become an Effective Presenter and luckily I found your articles.

The said seminar-workshop will be intended for people who are in the travel and tours industry, and whose business requires a lot of marketing.

May I ask permission to use your articles as one of my references?

Thank you.

Yes, this is a well written article. I've been doing editing for some time, and I always felt that writers do not realize the value of editing. I wish, all writers read this article. I want to highlight the major point in the article here. While forwarding the writeup for editing, it is better, the writer gives a short note on the point(s) the writer wants to communicate to the reader. Incidently, this has to be done before writing and the self-edit must also be from this point of view.

Once again, thank you for helping people to understand the value of professional editing. Authors generally have a good sense of what they want to accomplish with a piece of writing, but they may know more about the subject itself than about how to present it. In the same way that authors are subject-matter experts, editors are specialists in the written word: they know how to make the writing support the message. For practical reasons, putting one person in charge of a complex document like an RFP makes sense; an editor has both the "macro" perspective ("Is everything here, and is it structured according to the requirements?") and the "micro" perspective ("This number doesn't match the one on the previous page---which one is correct?") to keep things on track.

Great post, Rich. The idea of editor as partner, not as vindictive upholder of the style guide, is one that I teach every chance I get -- including at a workshop this Friday. I've been doing this for nearly 25 years now, and it has greatly enriched my relationships with authors from around the world, across a sometimes surprising diversity of cultures and languages. We produce great things when we work together rather than at cross-purposes.

Rich,
Great article...and it reminds me of a presentation I've given over the years...Editing with Heart. I have always said that the editor's job is to support the writer and help--not hinder--their success. Glad to see someone else coming from the same direction.

Thanks,

Thanks for this great post, Rich...it's filled with practical tips for anyone preparing a presentation. Even more important, however: It provides a call for presenters to put both their minds and hearts to work in determining just what they want to give to their audiences...and to themselves. I'm preparing a presentation for a conference in April -- and your post will be one of the tools I will refer to in my efforts to "know where I am going," so I can give my audience the clarity and insight they deserve.
